From Texas' PUC
The Public Utility Commission of Texas offered some helpful energy and electricity savings tips including those related to heating and cooling (click the link above to read the full set of tips):Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC)
- Clean or replace furnace filters once a month (or as needed) with a filter that has a MERV 11 rating or higher.
- Ensure that your HVAC system is properly sized for your home.
- At the beginning of cooler or warmer weather have a professional come out to inspect your HVAC system.
- Have your duct system checked for air leaks and proper insulation.
- Consider installing a "whole house fan" to improve circulation and ventilation throughout your home.
- Do not use humidifiers or evaporator ("swamp") coolers with the air conditioner.
- Close vents in unused rooms
Some Energy Bill Savings Tips
From Texas' PUC
The Public Utility Commission of Texas offers a resource to help those in Grayson County better understand the various charges and fees on their monthly electricity bills (click here for the full PDF). Some of those charges and fees include:- PUC Assessment – a fee assessed to recover the statutory fee for administering the Public Utility Regulatory Act.REP Charges – Retail Electric Providers may bundle all charges as¬sociated with your electric service into the price per kWh or they may separate the charges using the following:TDU Delivery Charges – charge to cover the cost of moving electricity from the generation plant to your home.Transmission Distribution Surcharges – one or more TDU surcharge(s) on a customer’s bill in any combination. Surcharg-es include charges billed as tariff riders by the TDU.Transition Charge – utilities are allowed to securitize or refi-nance their regulatory assets and/or stranded costs (assets that become uneconomical as a result of deregulation) as long as it benefits ratepayers. Securitizing debt provides funding at a lower cost than traditional utility funding. Utilities are also al-lowed to recover the transaction costs of securitization through this fee.
